Vineeta Singh Responded to This Cold Email
Imagine landing a reply from the CEO of the $85M SUGAR Cosmetics empire and Shark Tank India's judge. One cold email made it happen—here’s how I did it.
Love the idea of absorbing information on the go? I've got you covered with an audio version of this newsletter. You'll find it just below. Enjoy!
Welcome back to another episode of Kabir Cold Emails Millionaires! Today, we're diving into the email I sent to none other than Vineeta Singh, the powerhouse CEO of SUGAR Cosmetics.
SUGAR Cosmetics is a big player, having raised a whopping $85 million since its inception in 2015. And if that's not impressive enough, Vineeta Singh also sits as a judge on Shark Tank India.
High stakes? You bet.
Flashback to 2021. I wasn't the Kabir Krishn, Founder of upTalkk, you know today. Back then, I was hustling for my then employer, trying to bring in sales.
But even in those days, I had an inkling of the power a well-crafted cold email could wield. The day I got a response from Vineeta, my belief in the potency of cold emails only strengthened.
The Email Breakdown
The Cold Email
Subject Line: coming to you from Ruminations :)
Now, ‘Ruminations’ was the name of Vineeta's old personal blog. She started it way before she became the household name she is today - back in her grad school days. So this was a serious research find.
I felt like an archaeologist who had just discovered a lost civilization.
As I dove into the sea of her thoughts, post after post, I found a nugget that I thought would make the connection I was looking for.
Opening Line: Hi Vineeta, I hope you are doing well.
Looking back at this email from 2021, it's clear how my approach has evolved. You'll notice I started with the seemingly harmless line 'hope you're well'. It seemed cordial, maybe even polite. But now? I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole.
Why? Because it eats up precious real estate in your recipient's inbox preview. It's non-specific, it's expected, and frankly, it's a little lazy.
But, miraculously, it did the job back then. Can't say I'd take that gamble today, though. If you're drafting an email, get to the point. Your reader will thank you.
Body: I was reading one of your interviews before I stumbled on your blog and found it quite interesting to read through your thoughts before you launched SUGAR Cosmetics in 2015 with Kaushik.
Looking back at this line, I see where I got a bit carried away. It's a beast of a sentence, and honestly, it could do with some trimming and chopping. If I were to write it now, I'd break it up into smaller, digestible pieces, making it easier to read and understand.
The mention of her co-founder came from basic research - a no-brainer, really. But now, I see that I could go deeper, offer more value to my audience. I'd incorporate a unique aspect of their early journey next time. Something that isn't found on the first page of Google search results.
Following Line: In the recent interview, you mentioned your goal to double revenues in the next 12 months through 1) New Product Development and 2) Sales and Marketing efforts. I am writing to you with regards to #1 for now.
The effectiveness of this strategy was undeniable - it was a direct hit on her business targets. But if I were to take a crack at this today, I'd add a little something extra. I'd mention the source of the interview.
Sounds minor, right? But in reality, it shows that you've done your homework, that you’ve taken the time to genuinely understand the person behind the business. It keeps the conversation grounded, relatable.
Details matter. More than we often realize.
Offer: We are an up-and-coming cosmetic manufacturer based out of Delhi. We've been creating proprietary formulations for personal and beauty care for the past 5 years and have worked with brands such as The Man Company, Tru Naturelle, Wild Organic, Bebe Nature to build cost-effective, high-quality, and innovative beauty products.
Sharing our experience and mentioning those powerhouse brands we've worked with wasn't just about name-dropping. It was strategic. It provided tangibility to our claims, showing we weren't just another new kid on the block.
Our words had weight, our offer was solid and backed by a proven track record. This, my friends, is how you add a layer of credibility to your pitch. It's how you anchor your offer in reality.
Call to Action: I would love to schedule some time with you for a thought exchange discussion and see if we can be a good fit for each other. Here's our brochure to give you an idea of what we do.
I kept the call-to-action breezy and non-committal. The key sentence here? 'see if we can be a good fit for each other.' This phrase is my secret weapon for maintaining a professional demeanor without seeming too keen. It subtly communicates that I'm not just after her business, which always leaves a good impression!
Remember, desperation is never a good look. Keep it cool, confident, and see if we can cultivate a beneficial partnership.
PS: How far have you come to the 100 Marathons Club 8 years after writing that blog post?
I adore this part—the PS line. This is where I lace in that personal connection. I circled back to her marathon objective from her older blog, linking it to the subject line. It's these tiny, thoughtful elements that can either make or break a cold email.

The Takeaways
So, why did this email hit the mark?
Personalization: Citing her past blog about marathons made a big splash.
Relevance: My proposition was directly linked to her business objectives.
Effortless Call-to-Action: 'See if we’re a good fit' kept it relaxed and no pressure.
